Oil and Gas Inspection: Methods and Technologies
In the Oil & Gas industry, safety, reliability, and production continuity are top priorities. Process facilities, pipelines, storage tanks, structures, and other industrial assets are consistently exposed to factors that can lead to material degradation, such as corrosion, erosion, fatigue, and mechanical damage. Regular integrity inspections are a crucial component of any asset maintenance strategy, as they enable the early detection of potential issues and allow for the planning of corrective actions before these issues result in costly downtime or operational failures.
Today, advanced inspection technologies are playing an increasingly vital role in this process. These technologies include unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), 3D laser scanning, high-resolution imaging, and thermal sensors. Such tools facilitate safe and efficient data collection, even in hard-to-reach locations.
Ultimately, all these solutions support a single objective: ensuring the continuous, safe, and optimized operation of industrial assets.
In this article, we outline our approach to inspection and integrity management, drawing on 25 years of experience supporting engineering assets in the Oil & Gas industry.
Oil and Gas Inspection Methods
Visual Inspection
Visual inspection is a critical method for evaluating the condition of equipment and infrastructure in the Oil & Gas sector. It involves a thorough examination conducted by qualified inspectors who are skilled in identifying defects, signs of wear, corrosion, and other anomalies that could affect operational safety and reliability.
During the inspection, comprehensive photographic documentation is collected to create a clear record of the condition of the inspected assets. Each identified issue is meticulously documented, including its location, nature, and potential impact on future operations. Inspection reports also assess the severity of the damage and provide recommendations for repair actions or additional diagnostic investigations.
This approach enables asset owners to make informed decisions regarding maintenance planning, shutdown management, and technical risk mitigation.
Drone Inspection
Drone-based inspections have become one of the most widely used methods for assessing the condition of oil and gas infrastructure. This technology facilitates the safe and efficient inspection of assets located in hard-to-reach or potentially hazardous areas, reducing the need for scaffolding, rope access operations, or production shutdowns.
During an inspection, drones equipped with high-resolution cameras and specialized sensors capture photographs and video footage, which are then analyzed by experienced inspectors. This data can reveal issues such as corrosion, structural deformation, coating failures, and other defects that may compromise the safe operation of the asset.
Drones are commonly employed to inspect flare stacks, process chimneys, storage tanks, pipelines, offshore platform structures, and areas beneath the main deck of floating units. Their ability to quickly access challenging locations significantly reduces inspection time while minimizing risks to personnel.
Additionally, underwater inspections using Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) are becoming increasingly common. These systems allow for the inspection of ballast tanks, submerged sections of offshore platforms, port structures, vessel hulls, and other underwater infrastructure. The data collected provides a detailed assessment of asset integrity without necessitating costly shutdowns or intrusive maintenance activities.
Thermal Inspections
Thermographic inspections involve analyzing temperature distribution using specialized thermal imaging cameras. These cameras can be operated by inspectors or mounted on drones, enabling inspections in hard-to-reach areas.
Using thermal imaging allows for the early detection of defects and anomalies that are often missed during standard visual inspections. Variations in temperature can indicate issues such as damaged insulation, process leaks, overheating electrical components, malfunctioning mechanical equipment, and areas that may be at an increased risk of failure.
Regular thermal inspections play a crucial role in proactive maintenance by identifying problems before they lead to serious failures or unplanned production shutdowns. As a non-invasive, safe, and efficient inspection method, thermography provides valuable data that enhances asset integrity management, improves energy efficiency, and boosts operational safety.
The methods outlined above reflect just the primary types of inspections conducted on offshore facilities. Systematic inspection campaigns significantly contribute to:
- Improved personnel and asset safety
- Early detection of degradation and deterioration
- Reduced unplanned downtime
- Extended asset service life
- Optimized maintenance costs
- Compliance with industry standards and regulatory requirements
- More effective planning of repairs, shutdowns, and upgrades
CAPNOR Inspection Support Solutions
Ayelix
Ayelix was developed to transform dispersed field data into easily accessible digital resources that support technical decision-making. The platform operates as a web-based spatial data management system, providing access to 3D laser scans, panoramic imagery, and technical documentation from a desktop computer, tablet, or smartphone.
Faster Access to Asset Information
Ayelix allows inspectors, engineers, and technical specialists to remotely review offshore facilities without requiring mobilization to the platform or vessel. Often described as a “Street View for Industry,” the platform enables users to navigate through a digital representation of the asset, analyze 360° imagery, and perform measurements directly within the online environment.
Improved Planning of Inspections and Maintenance Activities
Access to up-to-date spatial data allows teams to define project scopes and prepare work packages before traveling offshore. Inspection areas can be identified in advance, access routes reviewed, and required equipment and procedures prepared. This reduces unnecessary mobilizations and minimizes time spent offshore.
Digital Documentation of Defects and Observations
Ayelix enables users to attach annotations, technical documentation, and inspection findings directly to specific locations within an asset. Corrosion, damage, leaks, and non-conformities are therefore linked to their exact positions, simplifying maintenance planning and progress tracking.
Corrosion Management and Asset Integrity Support
The platform’s development roadmap includes AI-driven functionality for automatic corrosion detection and classification based on photographs and field data. This capability will help organizations identify high-risk areas more efficiently and monitor changes in asset conditions over time.
Integration of Data from Multiple Sources
Offshore projects often rely on data generated by multiple contractors and systems. Ayelix consolidates information from laser scanning, panoramic photography, drones, Digital Twin platforms, and engineering documentation into a single environment, ensuring all stakeholders work from the same verified data source.
Enhanced Collaboration
The platform provides simultaneous access for operators, inspectors, engineers, maintenance teams, and contractors. As a result, information exchange becomes more efficient and decision-making regarding repairs, maintenance campaigns, and modification projects is significantly accelerated.
IOM
IOM is a mobile and web-based application designed to associate photographs with precise locations on industrial assets. During offshore operations, inspectors can capture images of corrosion, leaks, coating damage, structural defects, and other anomalies, then assign them directly to their actual location on the facility.
This ensures that every observation is clearly linked to a specific area on an offshore platform, FPSO, vessel, or industrial installation.
Better Organization of Inspection Data
Traditional inspection reports often contain hundreds of photographs that can be difficult to manage and analyze later. Within IOM, every image is stored together with its location, description, and relevant technical information, simplifying inspection reviews, repair planning, and maintenance tracking.
Effective Corrosion and Damage Management
One of the primary applications of IOM is supporting integrity assessments and Fabric Maintenance programs. Inspectors can document corrosion findings, create observations, add comments and repair recommendations, and attach photographic evidence directly in the field. All information is subsequently synchronized with the Ayelix platform, creating a centralized knowledge base for asset integrity management available immediately for all personnel involved to the process via Ayelix portal.
Integration with the Digital Twin
One of the key advantages of IOM is its integration with Ayelix. Inspection data collected offshore can be linked to 3D laser scans, panoramic imagery, and technical documentation available within the asset’s digital twin environment. This allows onshore engineers to quickly locate and assess reported issues without needing an additional offshore visit.
Faster Reporting
IOM streamlines the inspection reporting process by collecting all relevant information in a single location. The system has been designed to generate detailed reports containing photographs, locations, defect descriptions, and recommended corrective actions, significantly reducing the time required to prepare documentation after fieldwork has been completed.
Foundation for Future AI-Powered Analysis
The ongoing development of IOM and Ayelix includes the implementation of artificial intelligence for automatic corrosion recognition, equipment tag identification, and object classification based on photographs and field data. In the future, these capabilities will support inspectors by accelerating defect identification and automating parts of the asset integrity assessment process for offshore facilities.
